Four compressor cores. Five tape-machine characters. Magnetic-hysteresis saturation with pressure-reactive wow and flutter - from transparent bus glue to worn-cassette wreck.
REEL-COMP is a tape compressor and saturation plugin for engineers who want character, not a transparent gain tool. Run a drum bus through it and the transients round off the way they do on real tape - punch without the spike. Push a vocal and it thickens and sits instead of poking through. Strap it across the mix and it glues the whole thing together. Underneath are four compressor cores you swap on the fly: a clean feed-forward core for invisible bus glue, a self-pumping feedback core that breathes and fights the signal, a hard-knee VCA core that hits drums and bass like a hammer, and an experimental hysteresis core with memory in the gain domain that grabs and lets go on its own terms.
The saturation is a real magnetic-hysteresis model, not a tanh curve bolted to a knob, so the harmonics come out thick, asymmetric, and program-dependent - what tape actually does and what most digital fakes. Choose one of five tape-machine characters - SILK, VELVET, OXIDE, GRIT, FERRO - each with its own drive, wow and flutter, and frequency response, then add age and magnetic wear until it sounds as beat-up as the record in your head. The motion is generative and never repeats, and it moves harder the harder you push the compressor, so the unit reacts to the performance instead of looping a static LFO. A full stereo stage rides at the end: mid/side width, transient-differential widening, a bass mono-maker, and an iron-core transformer. Original DSP inspired by the classics, not a measured clone. No marketing math, 64-bit internal, oversampled where it counts, and your audio never leaves the machine. VST3 and CLAP. Perpetual license, three machines.
